Yes if you can find a branch of the bank the check was issued from that is the best way. Yes you could take it to a check cashing place but if it is out of state they may not cash it. And of course there is a fee and it could be %9 percent of the check.
Most always a bank will hold the money and deposit it in your account when it clears. But in this day and age only a couple of days is the norm. But often if you deposit it in the ATM they will let you withdraw a portion against it, but not always. Just go to your bank and ask. You could always leave and think about it. If you have been with the bank for awhile sometimes you can talk them into giving you $100 or something against it.
But best thing...... since you already waited to recieve the check just go to the bank now. The faster you get it in your account the faster you will get it. Go in the bank, ask and deposit it if you have to. This is faster than the ATM. And before 2:00 PM is best.

If in your area there is a branch of the bank the check is drawn from (the University's bank), you can take it there and cash it. All you need is an ID - you don't even need to have a bank account at all. Better still, you won't have to wait for the check to clear - if funds are available, they'll cash it immediately.

Yes, you have to have enough to cover it...but you can also deposit some and take some too.. But yes you have to have money in the bank. If it makes you feel better, go to your bank and ask the manager to look at the check and he/she may see its a refund from the college and let you cash it!

It helps to have a bank account, even if you don't have that much cash in it. Just make sure that you have ID.

No, go to a check cashing place such as Western Union and they'll cash it for you...for a fee.
