Fluorine: Adding fluoride salts to water helps prevent tooth decay.

Chlorine: Treating drinking water with chlorine prevents bacterial infection. Whole towns and cities may be protected from infectious disease.

Bromine: There is a product called Bromo-Seltzer, which calms "sour stomach" and relieves headache.

Iodine: Add it to salt, use the salt on your food. You will prevent goiter. If you ever become hyperthyroid, go to a doctor who practices nuclear medicine. She will inject you with radioactive iodine-125. This radioisotope will destroy a certain amount of your thyroid tissue, leaving you normal.

Trust me: I have gotten my cat two treatments of radioactive iodine (cats have two thyroid glands; my cat had the bad luck to have disease in both). She is normal.
