Wireless Cable Ethernet (phone connection DSL)

The answer to this depends upon your area and how much money you want to spend.

The most common means of connecting are DSL and Cable. DSL is not available to all users because of speed issues. The farther you are away from the phone company equipment, the slower it will go, and after about 18,000 feet you can't get DSL because the signal degrades too much. DSL goes for $10/month and up. Cable is only available if your cable provider has it available in your area. It is typically more expensive than DSL (average of 2x-3x more) but it is the same speed no matter how far out from the box you are. Cable typically starts at $35/month and up.

Wireless is being offered in many cities or rural areas for reasonable fees, but it will almost always be higher than DSL. The speed depends upon whether or not you are in line of sight of the transmitter or not, and sometimes how far away you are. Prices start in the range of $25/month and up.

Fiber Optic is available in some areas. It is FAST, but also expensive. The speed is constant and simply amazing. Be prepared to pay if it is available to you. Pricing starts around $50/month and up.

T1 is the base industry standard for hosting a website. The speeds are 1.5mb up and down. Be prepared to empty your bank account each month for this. Average is $600+ per month.

Satellite is available through some companies (Dish Network comes to mind) and is a good alternative for very rural people. Speeds vary with the weather and the wind but are typically in the realm of a DSL connection. Prices start at about $70/month.

There is no such a thing as *the best* in this world, and all depends on what satisfies you and makes you happy. Said this, the "best" is what you're happy with.

Now, speaking of Internet speeds, then a cable connection is the fastest speed you can get, being conventional landline (phone) the slowest, then DSL faster, and cablemodem the fastest.

Satellite technically is suposed to be the fastest due to the biggest bandwidth available on a satellite channel, but in most of cases it is not, so practically you'll find cable connections the fastest available anywhere.

I hope this helped.

Wireless connection is limited by the speed of your wireless card/router.
DSL is bad and limited to the speed of the copper wires in your area (generally bad)
Cable is the best, T1 is the fastest

DSL. You can talk on the phone and surfe at the same time. Dail-up you can't do that.
