Do you think that would be unwise, broadcasting our plans to the enemy, and denying flexibility to our commanders on the ground? Or is it a necessary step?

Civil answers, please.

Even if we pull out immediately, telling your opponents your military plans is never a good idea. I personally think the 'surge' is working and if congress stays out of the way, we will be able to withdraw sooner. Anytime you say if X happens we leave at Y time, the enemy will be sure to make it APPEAR that X happened.

YES.
We've had withdrawal conditions in place for a long time IF the Iraqis meet requirements, they haven't.
A set time frame puts pressure on the Iraqi government to pursue political solutions within Iraq, the only way a real peace will happen between the factions.
The current policy of Bush with no time frames and an unlimited pocket book puts no pressure, gives no incentives, and allows the continued nothing but the status quo to happen.

Well, let's look at the alternative.

We remain for 5 to 12 years or so.

We'll have an average of 500 or so wounded Americans and God only knows how many dead coming home every month of that period. We're holding at about 700 wounded a month so far this year.

The violence continues, no matter how many surges the military conducts.

The hate against the Americans in that part of the world continues to increase, feeding the violence.

About the only thing that will unite the three key groups and their sub groups is their resentment of the people who refuse to leave.

I guess if there is any logic in this tactic, it is to keep the majority of radical extremists heading to Iraq to throw themselves on the fires.

But someday the smart ones will turn their attention again to the US.

And the so-called homeland security will have still failed in securing the border because we're squandering our best efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I'll leave the rest of that scenario for you to play out.

Not a pretty picture, is it?

Stay the course. That's the chant even when the boat is sinking.

ALL aspects of that question only play into the hands of our enemies.
It is a multifaceted argument I could write volumes about but I can find no aspect if the question where it is helpful to American interests to set a withdrawal date.
Watch out for specious arguments to the contrary.
The ONLY reasons for withdrawal are EVENT based.

No, of course not. I agree, it completely undermines the troops' effort in Iraq and does exactly what you said-it lets the enemy know that they can kill, torture, and capture our soldiers and these stupid liberals will do absolutely nothing about it. I also agree with BDZot on the conditions rather than a date.

No lets sneak out during the night. While they sleep. Or maybe we should just stay there forever because its a known fact nothing will ever change! Sorry, this is a weak subject for me personally

Withdrawal date? No.

Withdrawal conditions? Yes. Once the Iraqis are able to manage their populace, industry, economy, and security without our help, yes, we should leave.

I think that's generally described as "success"....so, when we succeed, we should leave.
