I assume you mean inside the house. Of course, outside you cannot get rid of them - that's where they have a right to live.

Inside, get ant traps - they're usually four for a small amount of money. Open them as directed on the box and position them where you see the ants. Especially at doorways or windows. You may need to put quite a few down. (Be careful if you have pets or small children. Follow the instructions on the container.)

This always works for us.

If they are on the inside they are on the outside too.
Get them at the source first. Get Eliminator poison granules for ants fleas and ticks at Lowes. If you have pets not to worry because you water it down in the ground after you spread it.
I have tried everything else but this really works.
If they are in the house you will have to treat indoors too with a spray that shoots into the crevices. Mine are gone!

If'n they are on your plants, it's cause your plants have aphids,

Mix 1 tbsp of Octagon dishsoap in a gal of water and spray your plants every 2 weeks

We use a mix of Borax, water and sugar placed in a jar lid. This seems to attract and dispose of them. This mix though is highly poisonous to humans and animals.

Boric Acid in powder form is supposed to work.Just sprinkle it where they enter the house.Boric Acid is safe to use in the house.

Pour salt in your open wounds.
Apply vinegar to the salt.
Apply a leech, and a slug.
