Indeed
You need the correct drivers and a dvd decoder application
[ dvd decoder ] in order for your system to to understand how to play and read a dvd. I assume a five year old pc would not have this technology.
You should look into sonic dvd decoder being the cheapest dvd decoder that I am aware of.
All the best

You may need an 80 pin cable, and the older computers had 40 pin. You can tell if its 80 pin by the color (darker grey) and finer lines. Some dvd players will not work without them.
If you have multiple cd/dvds, you need to set one to master (DVD want this spot, and put it on the end of the cable) and one to slave (put this on the middle connection) by switching the pins in the back of the roms, according to the markings or instructions on the ROM device.
Your operating system should pick up the driver and install it by itself. (win 2k or xp)
You can go to the manufactures website and see if there is a firmware update for the particular model you have purchased as well, which can often help when only some disks are not recongnized.
CD-R is most common, but some are very specific, such as CD+/-RW or CD+R The newer the dvd device, the more likely you will need the 80 pin connector, and the more formats it will play with.
When it comes to playing the new disk, you will also have to have a player that plays the format.
Just so you know, new DVD Burners are cheap (40 to 50 bucks), so why go used?
Good Luck

If your using XP you won't need a CD as long as you see the drive listed in my computer , but one thing you can do is check with the maker of this drive in case there are new firmware files for it .. I have several pioneer drives and they all had updates so check with the manufacturer on that .. Another thing is maybe the media ( disk type) ..or your processor speed and ram.. there are system requirements for that too ..
Get a good program for DVD there are many around and see if that works ..

No you don't need a CD for driver if you asked that :P
But maybe you forgot to plug on of the cables from DVDROM to PC!
The dvd-rom has two lets say cables!
1.for power suply
2.for connection to computer]
1.Is not a problem since your DVD is still working somehow
2 may be the problem
You see the cable wich connects to PC has some more "heads" wich plugs(every) into a special place
If one of those "heads" has something on it or it is not plugged ok ... then this may give you that kind of "error"
;P

You should be able to go on to the manufacturer of the DVD drive's website to possibly download the driver for it. You do need the software that is required to run it.

Ifr the DVD drive isn't ATAPI compliant (which doubt) you will need drivers.
