The faster seach engines store pages on there servers. They have 24 hrs a day 365 days a year to do this. Ever noticed how sometimes a link comes up empty. Or in others words "this site no longer exists" Thats because the site has been discontinued but not yet removed from the search engine.

they dont search the live data in seconds, what they really do is the ocasionally scan for websites, and save the text from those websites that they scan on their hard drives. So when you search fro something you are sear4ching their hard drives, and some times that data will not be 100% up to date, but could possibly be a few days or weeks off.

They index all the pages and keep information about them in 1000s of machines in memory.
When your request comes it, it selects the correct index and looks up information and gives you all relevant pages.
