It would help to have the focus requirment of the assignment.

To come up with one, think of a question you'd like to answer in your paper; this is called the thesis question. Then, turn that question into a statement which you back up with evidence from the story (one piece of evidence per paragraph, thus requiring three topic sentences).

An example would be:
Question: Is Charles Paris a true hero?
Statement: According to the definition, Charles Paris is a true everyday hero.
TS 1: Although he drinks and is out of work, Charles takes the initiative to look into the murder/suicide.
TS 2: A hero must overcome a personal setback to prove his worth; Chales does this when he ________________ (give an example of when things looked bad)
TS 3: Charles does not look for medals, glory or fame so he can be considered an "everyday hero."

If you want to use this idea, I'd start with an opening paragraph like this:

Heroes can be separated into two categories: superheroes and everyday heroes. The everyday hero is an average person who does something extraordinary; this can include firemen who run into burning buildings or teachers who help struggling students read. **Not Dead, Only Resting** (be sure to italicize the book title) by Simon Brett presents a character like this; an out-of-work actor who solves a murder mystery. According to the definition, Charles Paris is a true everyday hero.

Before you can ask anyone to help you write a thesis statement, you must show us your prompt. Is it about compare/contrast, literary elements, or human nature?
