Sonic the Hedgehog or Super Mario?
Consider special items (such as chaos emeralds or invincibility stars) to be available through the background of the battle, but each character must have the wits to locate the special items- for they are cleverly hidden.

To answer that question ,you would need to know the two's abilities. Mario needs items to fight ( mushrooms, hats, feathers etc.) while Sonic could do alot of things without using items( spin dash, homing attack, faster then the speed of SOUND!)
So I think Sonic would win.
Everyone always sas that Sonic could only run fast, but he has other abilities.
He can spin dash, homing attack, and move faster then the speed of sound without anything to help him. All mario can do is a little fight combo and is very acrobatic( but not like sonic).
Think about it, Sonic can run through a Mario stage in 5 seconds , where as MArion would die every time.

I'm going with Mario, he maybe fat and Sonic may be fast, but I'm sure Mario can come up with some tasty hedgehog and marinara recipes. Momma Mia that's a spicy hedgehog.

Mario. He has wisdom, man... he knows the tricks... Plus he is really strong even without invincibility stars.
But then again, that super speed of Sonic's would be majorly annoying. Though he can't turn bery quickly. hm...

Mario cause all sonic can do is run fast Mario has fire, a cape that makes him fly, can grow big with the help of mushrooms, etc.

I would have to go with sonic. All he would have to do is hold on to one ring and he wouldnt die.... Mario can only take 1-2 hits before dying.
