Snakes are refered to as ophidians by scientists.
According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snake
"Snakes (from Old English snaca, and ultimately from the Proto-Indo-European base *snag- or *sneg-, "to crawl"), also known as ophidians, are cold-blooded legless reptiles closely related to lizards, which share the order Squamata. There are also several species of legless lizard which superficially resemble snakes, but are not otherwise related to them. A love of snakes is called ophiophilia, a fear of snakes is called ophidiophobia. A specialist in snakes is an ophiologist."

As K H said, snakes are classified under the Suborder Serpentes. There are hundreds of different species of snake, in three major groups (Superfamilies)
The Henophidia includes the boas, pythons and relatives, such as the boa constrictor (Boa constrictor), rosy boa (Charina trivirgata), green anaconda (Eunectes murinus) and reticulated python (Python reticulatus).
The Typhlopoidea includes the blind snakes, such as the 150 or so different species in the Genus Typhlops alone.
The Xenophidia includes the colubrids, vipers and relatives, such as the flying tree snake (Chrysopelea ornata), the Western hog-nosed snake (Heterodon nasicus), the common garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis), the king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), the timber rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus), or any of hundreds of other species.

im not completely sure if there is a name for ALL snakes, but for each specific kind there is a specific name. all snakes are different and cannot be classified into one ginormous group! each has different ways of hunting, seeing, hearing, swimming, movement etc etc. but if you really wanted to know i suggest that you ask a proffesional herpetologist. (if u can meet one). and instead of copying and pasting my answer (which is illegal) i worked out my own answer from my common knowledge, if being honest means anything.
