act like they deserve a medal for becoming sober. if they hadn't abused the stuff in the first place they wouldn't have to get over it.

They are in pain. They think that drugs and alcohol "takes" away the pain but they dont realize they are only running from it and that pain will stay until they take some action. Its true though what ur saying cause people shouldn't abuse drugs and alcohol cause they are only causing themselves more pain and this time to their own bodies. Yes its true that they wouldnt need to try to get over it but this topic always makes me wonder why this stuff wasnt banned other than medical purposes a long time ago.

I don't think they act like they deserve a medal. I think they are just happy with their new life. I would suggest that you read up on addictions. Some never make it. It is a terrible thing. I am not trying to be a smart alec. I deal with addictive people daily. Most of them are very good people. They just don't know how to live with addiction unless others help them. My heart goes out to the addict wheather it be drugs or alcohol..This stuff destroys lives and families daily. It has nothing to do with will power. Get in an automobile take three ex-laxs and drive for 8 hours and not get out. Then tell me will power is all it takes.. Have a great day...

I have been working in the field of addiction for about a year now, previously I may have asked the same question...now I know better.
If you don't believe that addiction is a disease, not much different from diabetes or alzheimers, then you will never understand the problem.
A diabetic may never experience complications if he/she eats healthy and excercises properly their entire lives. However, if they live like most people then the disease that resides within them may be triggered and then they have to manage that for the rest of their existence. Very similar for the alcoholic/addict.

Being addicted to something and getting over it is one of the most diffucult struggles any human being can go through. You obviously don't have any idea. People don't choose to become addicts, they just experiment and end up liking it and using it more, or people with tragedies use it to mask their pain. Don't judge people, because you are not above becoming an addict of some kind yourself. Drugs and alcohol can change a person drastically, and it takes everything within them to change back to the person they were before. Don't be ignorant.

any addict that acts like they deserve a medal is a jerk. For example, I quit drinking 3 years ago. Except for the negative consequences to me, I'd still be drinking my butt off. I don't need a medal, I need to live on an island....with a Ferrai...
