It sounds like your network connection (Broadband or dial-up) is wired to your desktop computer. In order to use your laptop anywhere within your house, you will need to get a wireless router, a wireless network adapter for your laptop if it doesn't have one already. Your current desktop computer can be plugged directly into the LAN port of the wireless router, as long as you make sure it supports this feature. I have a Netgear router and they're pretty multi-funtional. This option only really works with Broadband or ADSL.
Otherwise, try a wireless switch that supports both wired and wireless networks. Have a look at the attached guide to home networking.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Long story made short: Buy a wireless router, hook it up to your other computer (the one with internet connection) and put a wireless card in your laptop. Easy as pie. Would you like a copy of my article on doing that?

Hey,now it is the era of wireless networking..
If you want to access the net in your whole house, without any hassles, then jus buy a wi-fi router, plug in the internet cable in it..
I am sure tat u must have got wi-fi(wireless lan) in your laptop.. If u dont have, jus buy a wi-fi adaptor, plug it in and configure it..
Switch on both the things, search for devices from your laptop, and create the connection... Enjoy!!

If you have cable or DSL, get a wireless router. You run a line from the cable/DSL modem to the router. Another goes from the router to your PC (desktop). If your laptop has wireless, then you're set! If not, you can get a USB wireless adaptor when you get the router.
