What makes a good ballad?

What's your favorite ballad and what is it about it that draws you to it?

Hmm... I suppose you could call "Cemetary Gates" a ballad? It's very interesting because it doesn't just repeat everything again and again... It's interesting and the opposite of generic...
"Every Rose Has It's Thorn" is good too... I suppose that's for the lyrics.
