Even what some family members say isn't legit. I guess it's those who love and truly respect you that you should heed to. But how do you do it? My belief system right now is that "I can't trust myself" so I look to outer sources to define myself and I don't like that. I'd like to make my own decisions and live my own life.

I know what you mean by that, I used to think that way.

I would try to find friends or role models who you really respect both for their accomplishments and their confidence, and see how they deal with the criticisms and troubles of their lives. You can spot these people by their honesty and willingness to treat everyone, "even me", respectfully. You can find these quality people if you look in the right places. If you're a student, a teacher can be a good role model. If you have an interest/passion, you may be able to meet new people who share your interest.

Good luck! The fact that you are thinking about this and trying to work on it means that you are already on the right path and will inevitably get there! Keep working!

You can't really control what you care about.. but you can control your actions. You just need some courage. You need to just do what you want to do and while you will feel uncomfortable at first and experience some disapprovel from others, you will eventually see that its not the end of the world if someone doesn't approve of something you do. And as you realize this more, you will begin to naturally care less about what people think because you'll realize that nothing is going to change at the end of the day and it really doesn't matter.

Another thing to remember is that saying: "the people who matter won't mind, and the people who mind don't matter"

for that last part-why don't u?
i gave up caring about what people(in general)think about me, all the stereotyping, and bulls**t i'd receive from people just didn't sink to my skin as i used to let it. why the hell would u bother worrying about what people say behind your back?in my opinion it's not worth it, it's pointless
my advice to u is don't let it get to u
whenever someone says something about u stop and think 'do they really know me THAT well to judge me this way?'-most of the time the answer is going to be no-but then again this is just me
good luck to man

When you shift the center of gravity from the outside to your inside. Know who you are, where you came from and remind yourself of you core beliefs and you will be OK.

Just tell yourself that it doesn't matter because they don't know you. You can be plenty worried if they're relatives, but don't be scared of stranger's opinions.
