That depends on WHY you want to clean out your "computer closet". If it's just for the spring cleaning spirit, then I would recommend that you manually search for old files in My Documents, Shared, and My Pictures. You may also want to go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Change or Remove Programs Tab and just give a good look through them.
If the reason is to improve speed on your computer, then there is a great program called Ccleaner that does it for you. The website is www.ccleaner.com. The link to directly download it is here
http://www.filehippo.com/download/dfd2c33821e6c294ab7e186cf58ea0eb/download/
After you install it, click Analyze and let it analyze. Then hit Run Cleaner. It automatically gets rid of unneeded files. Then go to the Issues tab on the left > click Scan for Issues > let it scan for issues > click Fix Selected Issues > Click No (it asks if you want to save a backup, you don't have to save it) > click Fix All Selected Issues. I would say it improves the speed remarkedly.
If your computer is just plain laggy, I would recommend that you save all your important documents and format (or reset) your harddrive.
If your computer is extremely slow, then you might want to purchase a new one at www.newegg.com or www.dealcatcher.com or www.tigerdirect.com.
Hope that helps!

This little application is gold dust!!!!
crap cleaner
heres the download link
http://www.filehippo.com/download/dfd2c33821e6c294ab7e186cf58ea0eb/download/
This gets rid of all the internet temp files and junk but WONT delete your docs and photos etc.
My IT manager told me about it and he managed to reclaim 4Gb by deleting crap!!!
I personally would run this app (very small) and then :
i know this isnt really related but i would also run adaware to check that you haven't got any spyware running.
http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5
and then finally defrag your drive.
you could also run a duplicate file finder.. its suprising how many duplicate files you will have on your pc.
good luck.
