If I want to become a horse vet specializing in orthopedics, do I have to learn about all of a horse's health and all its systems?

In veterinary school you aren't just going to learn to treat horses- even if that is going to be your specialized field. Just like human doctors you will learn a little bit of everything from treating dogs and cats to treating goats, horses, and cattle.
Take it from me who spent 8 years in college, you'll want all the experience you can get with every animal. Each species has something different to teach you.

In my experience in talking to my vets through out the years yes you would. I would think that you would have to learn all the basics first before you start to specialize your field. If I where you I would want to learn as much as I could going into any job career. Good Luck we need more horse good horse vets.

Yes, you do. Everything in the horse is connected somehow, so to truly understand orthopedics, you are going to need to know the rest of the horse. Besides, would you go to an orthopedic doctor if he/she didn't know anything about the rest of your body? I wouldn't, and who would want a vet that only knew about the equine orthopedics to work on their horse? I wouldn't.

As far as I know, there is a semi-standard course of veterinary medicine classes that all vet students take. Then, on top of those, you can pick your specialty.

All of the other systems will work together and impact each other, so you need to know them.

If you are wanting to be a vet, wouldn't you want to be able to help the horses get and stay well in any way that you can?
