In a fire, electricity is often the first thing to go out, so the elevator won't work, and you'll be stuck in an oven with no fresh air.
In some buildings, even when the electricity does go out, the elevators are programmed to have just enough energy to get down to the bottom floor and open up (to release anyone who was riding in the elevator at the time). Some building have a fire shield over the opening, however, to seal off the air in the elevator bay to keep the fire from spreading from floor to floor through the elevator shaft.
So for your safety, and the safety of the building, take the stairs.

The reasoning behind not going down a elevator when there is a fire is, even though you may not see the fire it MAY be burning the electrical wires that supplies power to it. Also it could be burning the roof trust that supports the elevator. You would never know that any of this is happening in a building that is big enough for smoke to get around and would suffer the results.

Confined space for smoke to collect and they cut the Electric while they put out the fire which means the elevators stop

When there is a fire, the power will most likely shut off. The elevator if in use will stop, the doors won't open, you will most likely die from the heat.

several reasons, power failure, will cause you to be trapped in an insulated tunnel, great for fires to travel up.
while trapped, you could be burnt alive, suffocated by smoke or poisoned by gas vapours. Also the breaks or cables on the elevator could fail plummeting you to the ground at fatal speeds, Also you trapped in an elevator, means some poor hard working firefighter has to enter the building endangering thier life, to save yours.
SO ATFER HEARING ALL THAT, AREN'T YOU GLAD YOU TOOK THE STAIRS?????

Because the elevator could get stuck between floors and then you would wind up burning up inside.

baically, if you do that, there is a good chance that you are basically killing yourself, power goes out=get stuck, smoke coming in= suffocation, cables melt=fall to death, fire getting in= cremation. basically a elevator is a death trap in a fire. the fire escape is made to be mostly fire proof and theres no chance of any cables snapping for a fire escape so you wont fall to your death. at least you wont be trapped in a small space waiting to die if you take the fire escape.
