I think that would be pretty cool. I would certainly appreciate it! But of course, not everybody allows you to e-mail them, so I guess that won't be possible EVERY time you get a best answer. In those cases you could leave a thank-you in the little comment box, although nobody ever really reads those. Well, I don't anyways... You are not required nor expected to send a thank-you e-mail to everyone that gives you a best answer, but I think that would be very nice on your part. It depends on the person that receives the e-mail, though. Some might get freaked out, some might find it enjoyable, like me!

Normally, I won't clutter anyones's email with a thank you, since I can do a Thanks right with the comments section.

Unless there is some significant bit of information to clarify something to a poster, I just can't justify extra correspondence.

When they choose my answer as best I go back to the question and leave my thank you there on comments so as not to disturb someone's personal email...

I can't imagine why it would be rude. If the person allows their e-mail address to be given on this site, then it would seem they are inviting replies and thank-yous. So go ahead, make their day!

It depends on the person, I usually keep my email private. You can thank them in the question, in the added details part.

There's a function that allows you to reply if they say something about your answer, if not, you can e-mail them. Not everyone's email is public, though.

Thanks for adding some civility to Y!A.

I wouldn't consider it rude, now if you wrote them an obsessive amount of times then i could understand if it offended them. It wouldn't bother me, i can't speak for the others though.
