To motivate you to buy AND to create a topic. IE they want you to say to your friend "hey did you see that SNICKERS comercial?". This way, you become a sort of walking advertisement. You tell others, who tell others, who tell others. That way lots of people buy, even if they hadn't previously heard of it.

In a cluttered market of products with often very little distinguishing them from the competitor, advertising is a way of gaining mind-share from the potential consumer. In sum, the goal is to get you to purchase the product/service that is being advertised.

There are few reasons for it. If you are the advertiser, the purpose is to drive customers to your business so you can make more money. Customers need a way to find you, and they need a reason to find you. Ads are designed to fill that need.
If you are the publisher of the Ads, the purpose of them is to make you money. If you run a magazine, website, billboard on the highway or whatever, most of your money comes from the businesses paying you to get their ads noticed.

Companies pay for advertising and that is the main source of income for radio, tv and virtually all other media. No TV, no radio, without it.
