Heavy metal music???

Not much since the 80's but man it had a BIG influence in that decade.

check out this film..

as far as pop culture goes check VH1.com for Most Metal Moments.

Heavy metal gave us the infamous backward masking urban legend (it was all a hoax). Metal fans and bands have been lampooned in tv and film such as This Is Spinal Tap, Wayne's World and Beavis and Butthead. Metal bands from the 80's still influence a lot of bands today and many of those bands such as Iron Maiden still have a very loyal fan base. Metal music is used to advertise products from Nissan using Black Sabbath's Iron Man to Domino's Pizza and even MTV is guilty for not showing many metal videos in the 80's but using the bass riff from a Megadeth song for MTV news' theme in that decade.

Some rap artists and electronica musicians sample metal music in their songs. Legions of people who would normally never read classic literature would pick up a book simply because Iron Maiden or Anthrax wrote a song about it.

Finally although some rap artists may be loath to admit it if it wasn't for 70's metal such as Aerosmith then rap may never have come into existance just as some 80's metal did have some punk influence. Look at the Ramones, old Iron Maiden, Metallica in the 80's, Megadeth, etc. I saw an old Metallica interview where they were asked who influenced them and they were naming punk bands like Fugazi, the Misfits, etc.

good luck on your report

Watch "The Decline of Western Civilization Part II". That would give a good bit of info on the L.A. metal scene. It has interviews with both the bands and everyday kids of the time.
