how do i get my resolution higher on my xbox 360?

i got my 360 connect to my monitor with a vga cable but when i play the monitor menu only says 640x480 but when i use the monitor the the computer it goes up to 1280x1024 how do i get the xbox to that resolution

go to your xbox dashboard...go to the system blade (the one all to the right)...then console settings...then display...take note though that your monitor should support whatever resolution you want...but don't worry...try each one starting from the highest...windows will ask you if you see the screen...if not it will automatically go back to the original setting in 10 secs...
