John Steinbeck. He doesn't pretty up what he sees; his style is very simple, but highly descriptive, very tight. 'East of Eden' is one of my favorite books ever. Think I've read it two or three times so far.

Nora Roberts. She's not only prolific (3-4 books a year) she's an awesome storyteller. Really brings her characters to life.

Depends on the genre but overall, probably......Kurt Vonnegut. He's smart, unconventional, and had a string of books that made me laugh alot.
