if your talking about in the wild it is only one thing and that is the sun as it heats the air ground and water.
in captivity it depends on what reptile? but usually its under tank heaters, heat lights, or water heaters. heat rocks are not good for most reptilians as they can get too hot

1)sunlight, 2)the temperature of solids that the reptile touches, the ground, water etc, and the 3)activity of the reptile.

Firstly the sun, and is the most important, then the lights in the bearded dragon enclosure, and thirdly their baths that they should get regularly, then you get heating pads, heated rocks, and the different globes that the petshops try to sell a novice
