The Egyptian authorities ask for 6 i repeat 6 months validity on all UK passports entering Egypt.
i feel sure it would be the same for EU passports but try their web site the following is from the british embassy advice
i would seriously think about renewing your sons passport. i have travelled to egypt many times and they can charming but they can be very fiddly on the passport checks even complaining if you dont cross your T;s properly in the entry form

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

British visitors need a visa. These can be obtained from an Egyptian Consulate outside Egypt or on arrival by payment in Sterling or USD, for stays of up to a month. Passports should be valid for at least six months. Applications for visa extensions should be made at Egyptian Passport and Immigration Offices.

You may have difficulties leaving Egypt with an out of date visa. You will not normally be allowed to leave if the visa is out of date by more than 14 days. For visas and further information on entry requirements, check with the Egyptian Embassy in your country of residence. (Egyptian Representation in the UK.)

In general 6 months passport validity is required, but it is not the same for all countries and all the time. As you may know this kind of things change from time to time according to many details and circumstances.
As an Egyptian working in tourism I can tell you that they will let your son pass as long as his passport is valid for 3 months or more.
Wish you a nice trip and welcome in Egypt
