It's a rock and a hard place. If we leave Iraq the way it is, fending for itself, it will surely fail, but if we stay until all conflict is over, we may be there for a hundred years. I guess that's what happens when you try to inject 21st century democratic government into a nearly stoneage culture.

About as much as we will always be involved in Vietnam, Europe, or Japan. Wars come and go. The middle east is going to be a continuing issue because you have massive oil fields over there and lots of terror-friendly nations itching to use it to committ more etrocities.

I dont think US interests will be settled in the region until there are democracies and/or peace. This whole business of state sponsorship of terror needs to be solved in teh 21st century. GWB will be viewed in history as the Winston Churchill of terrorism.

Iraq was NOT a "near stoneage culture" before you guys invaded it to get at the oil.
Now they got a nice civil war going exactly as planned they will stay until the last drop of oil is squeezed out of the soil. Then they will look for another rewarding target unless they are stopped. Iran is already lined up in the sights.

Over a year ago Bush said it would be up to the next president to end the war in Iraq. Unless Congress can force him to end it sooner, through appropriations legislation, that's exactly what will happen. I think if they elections were today, we'd elect a candidate that would end the war. Imagine how much easier it will be to elect an anti-war candidate in another year and a half!

I think your hundred years is a big exageration. Sure, things can take longer, look how long we've been needed in Kosovo? If we pulled out of their today, all hell would break loose. Just like we did in Gemany, we probably will want to have some sort of military base present (if Iraq allows it) in the region for a while, particularly to keep an eye on the psycho in Iran.

The Bush Administration's plan was to occupy Iraq for the next 100 years similar to Hitler's plan for a "1,000 Year Reich." See Rumsfeld, Cheney and Wolfowitz's PNAC Manifesto for full details.

If Bush and his minions had their way if you are 15 today you would not see the end of conflict in Iraq and US involvement. Fortunately the grownups are in charge now and they are telling little Georgie he can't play that any more.

This is what you get for putting GWB in the white house...it would have been different if I was still the Prez!

If we do this right now, then we won't need to be there again and again for many years.
