I am conducting reference checks on someone we are considering for employment. He only has one employer referenced and two long time friends he has "helped out" in the past. I am not sure what to ask them.

-How do you know (name?)
-Did (name) ever perform work for you on a paid or volunteer basis? What projects did he do for you? Were they completed in time/in budget?
-What would you consider as his strengths?
-In what areas could he improve?
-Is there anyone else you think it would be helpful for me to speak with regarding (name?)

A few suggestions: What did he do for them? Did they compensate him for it in any way? Would they have paid him for the "help" he provided, if they could have? Would they say he was more quality or quantity oriented? Was he punctual? Reliable? Would they hire him? Is there any reason they can think of why you should/should not hire him?

That should get the conversation started, then pay attention to their answers. If anything they say raises any red flags, follow up until you are satisfied with the answers you get.

Hope this helps.
