First, install Ccleaner, its going to clear out all kinds of junk.
http://www.ccleaner.com
Run the Issues tool, let it back up the registry when it offers, don't worry about it.
Then run the Cleaner.
Next, delete any of your old files you no longer want. Back them up to external storage (an external hard drive or burn them to cd.)
To burn files to cd;
Open the folder.
left click on the files to select them..
In the task pane at the left of the folder a new option will appear - burn to cd.
Click that and the wizard will talk you through it step by step.
Now uninstall any old software you no longer want. Open Ccleaner, click Tools - Uninstall.
The list of software will appear, click on the program you don't want, click Uninstall.
Then run the Issues tool, then the Cleaner again. (Use the Issues tool every time you uninstall software.)
Then click Tools - Startup. Select everything not important, like your office suite. Leave Windows and your security software. The programs won't load when you restart, so they won't use RAM while you're not using them. You can still get them from your Start menu.
Defragment your hard drive from Start - programs - accesories - system tools - disc defragmenter. LEave the pc while it runs, and in future do this once a month.
You can save space by using different versions of software, for example, if you need to read PDF files try using Foxit PDF Reader (2mb) instead of Adobe Reader (20mb.)
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm - Foxit pdf reader.
Finally, keep your machine spyware free. You need all these anti spyware programs;
http://www.ewido.net - AVG(Ewido) anti trojan.
http://www.safer-networking.org - Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware. Use the Teatimer settings to protect Internet Explorer, and the Immuniser to stop malware getting on your pc.
Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com
Plus;
http://www.lavasoft.com - Ad-Aware SE Personal anti adware
Update and run them at least once a week.

If you go to Start>Control Panel>Add Remove Programs, you can look through the list for things you do not use or need, and remove them there. Easiest way.
Then you can go into your My Documents folder and delete anything unwanted there by selecting them (clicking or draggin if multiple) and hitting delete. Do the same in any video or audio folders or My Downloads if you have such a folder.
Empty the Recycle Bin when you are sure you don't want any of it.
You can also consider backing up things to burnable cds and dvds, that way you dont have to just chuck everything for good.

Have you deleted your temporary internet files? these are not necessary to keep, and can be safely removed. If you have never done this, then this will fill up your PC.
Right mouse click, on your internet explorer connection, go to internet properties you will see a box saying temporary internet files- click settings-click view files-go to edit- click select all -go to file- click delete.
See how much is removed by doing this. If you have never done this then it will take a few minutes for the files to delete, but you will not do any harm to you PC doing this. You will only do good.
If you still have hardy any room after this, delete Music, Pictures, or film clips etc, that you don't want anymore. These will be stored in your My Documents folder.
If you have any downloaded games that you don't want anymore remove these from add and remove programmes, which you will find in your control panel.
Good Luck

open windows explorer, and delete only stuff you know you have created.....dont touch the windows folder.....that would be very bad...... when w/e is open click on you hard drive..it will probably be something like (C:) this is the letter of your harddrive....you will then see all the files and folders you have....like i said only delete stuff you know that you have created... !! else your pc will not work properly..... the best way is to delete stuff ( put it in the recycle bin - but DONT empty it) then when youre done deleting.......turn off your pc.....then turn it back on......if it starts as normal you know you havent deleted anthing vital and can then empty the recycle bin without fear you are deleting system files.
Message to first answer....how does buying more memory get you more hard disk space.........????

There are many ways to clean c drive
1. Use c cleaner software (open source) or disk cleanup (inbuilt)
2. add more space from other drives (E,F.....) or use partition magic software
My computer (icon) - right click - Manage (May require admin permission) - split free space from drive - give it to C drive
3 Use defragmentation
4 Empty virtual storage
c - user - pc name - app data - local - virtual store (delete if not important content)
5 download adwcleaner (open source) ot antimalware

Go to the start menu - work out any games/programs you dont want - and uninstall them.
If you have movie files on your computer - they are very large. If you dont need them anymore - find the files and click on them once, and press the delete key on the keyboard (or you can right-click and select delete from the popup menu).

Open windows Explorer (you can do this by opening 'My documents').
Find all the files you don't want to keep.
Delete them.
Empty the recycle bin.
Do a defrag (Start - Programmes - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Defragmenter).
Do a clean up (as above but choose Disk Cleanup).
