Hi, I got an Acer 3692 wlmi in January and its excellent. Ignore Albert, he's probably rich and wouldn't dream of spending less than a grand. I got mine from comet but they are out of stock now.

Am looking for one for my daughter and if I can't get another Acer I am going to get the HP one from the link below. Spec is very good for £400 and ebuyer will deliver it next day. One of the guys at work just bought this machine.

Hope this helps

You need to look at the components used in the laptop.

Cheap components = common failures both in and out of warranty, especially with a large amount of usage.

Mixed tier components (like tier 1 and teir 3 or top quality and dogpile) in the machine wont help much either.

If you want something reliable, and guaranteed to work for at least 3 years then you'll be hard pressed in that budget. Something like this: http://store.stonecomputers.co.uk/store/product.php?product=51704&retailer=PUR009

or call stone and let them know what you are after

Well post your estimated demand and likely time usage and what applications you would be most likely to use and if you will be using it as you primary PC. it very important to decide what you want from a product before even looking. You have to do this first and as opinionated as all the previous answers are, and with consideration to their good intentions at attempting to answer you, YOU have to take pen to paper and decide what you personal requirement are first. No shop or sales team will tell you that!

Do that and modify your question and watch the response improve.

Go for it. I bought an Acer Aspire 3680 for under £400 and it works just fine. A right bargain. I've not had any problems with it, I'm on it all the time!

Dude do not buy a laptop at that price. They are the slowest. They also freeze every 5 or 10 minutes

It depends on the model that you buy and most of the laptops are older ones if any problems comes no body will help you.
Since they are all ready used ones.

you pays your money and you takes your choice. look mate, you should buy what you can afford and not go for a cheapy just to save money. a lap top is an imprtant item and you could use it for important stuff so buy the best product ( after advice ) that you can afford to buy and you should be ok. good luck.
