Why do we say "bye bye" but not "hi hi"?

Well im not sure, i usualy just say them once. Hi and bye or see ya later!

Just kidding, sheesh.
Maybe we are emphasising the loss we feel. Maybe hi hi doesn't have that ring to it.
Maybe it all stems from the psyche of this one little kid who we'll never know.

...and MAYBE NOT...

The better question is why do we say maybe not if maybe covers both outcomes already?
