Does this mean it needs replacing or are there some exercises I can do or supplements to take? What do you recommend. I don't want to see a doctor as they screwed up someone elses knee that I know.

You don't have to see the same doctor that your friend saw. See your family doctor and ask for xrays. You can take glucosamine and chondroiton for joint health and that will help if it is due to osteoarthritis. Your xrays can show that. Your family doctor can refer you to an orthopaedic surgeon based on your xrays. If you just have joint space narrowing, you have options. You can start with cortisone injections and if they help you can have those 4 times a year. Next you can try hyaluronan replacement injections( brand names Supartz, Synvisc, Orthovisc, Hyalgan) This is a series of 3 to 5 injections that can last up to 18 months. If that doesn't help you can have a surgical and diagnostic arthroscopy of the knee to clean up any damage and help. Final step/option is total knee arthroplasty (knee replacement)

You shouldn't always listen to what other people say. We have patients on a daily basis terrified to get an injection because someone told them it was horrible and when my doc does it they don't even feel it. You never know what the pain tolerance of someone is or if they are compliant with the doctor's orders. All of those things equate into their good or bad experience. Good Luck.

Mine did that too before I started taking P.E. in school 3 years ago. Maybe you should just start exercising it a little if you don't already.
