Emo is short for Emotional. Emo was used to describe bands like Rites Of Spring and Fugazi back in the mid and late '80s. Bands like Samiam, Jawbreaker, Grade, and The Get Up Kids kind of redefined what emo music is. By the late '90s everything from Face to Face, MxPx, No Use For Name and Strung Out could get tossed into the genre (why, I don't know?) Now bands such as Taking Back Sunday, Panic! at the disco & Simple Plan are now included in this genre. So yes it WAS a style of Punk Rock, but now it's just a sad excuse for 14 year olds to sing about how some girl/guy dump them and now they hate their lives.

emo are the guys who have no balls what so ever and all they do is cut themselves and have morbid thoughts of sucide but they dont have the balls to actually do it!

EXODUS interview:
That brings me to the next question, how do you feel about today's current music scene?

Gary: "I think it's really good. I mean, it's better in the United States than it used to be, but it still struggles, you know? Europe and Japan and other points around the globe still remain our bread and butter. It's getting better. The whole nu-metal thing died and I was so glad about that, but now we have all these emo kids who weigh like 105 pounds and wear girls' pants that won't even stay on there, 'cuz they have no *** to hold their pants up, they left their *** in the other pants. And they got their hair covering half their face, and the crooked hat, and I'm starting to miss nu-metal, to tell ya the truth. I mean, they have taken all the testosterone out of heavy metal, these guys. Stop whining and crying... Emo. The only emotion that's supposed to be in this music is anger and rage, not sissy complaints. I just don't get it. I look at those kinds and I'm like, 'Lift some weights, eat a hamburger, go do something."

Emo is a genre of rock music. Since its inception, emo has come to describe several independent variations of music, linked loosely but with common ancestry. As such, use of the term has been the subject of much debate.

It stands for "EMOtional"

Emo is a somewhat ambiguous, controversial slang term most frequently used to describe a fashion or subculture which is usually defined to have its roots in punk fashion and subculture, as well as some attributes of Gothic fashion and subculture.

Okay, sorry, but I emo is NOT a clique. You can't categorize it as punk. Emo is depression. It is a phase/stage. Most emo's dress punk but they are 2 diff. things.. Emo music expresses the way emo's feel. Emo stands for emotional. Most emo's are so depressed they cut their wrists...They don't know how to express their feelings any other way. They usually dress all black because that color makes them feel comforted....Hope that cleared things up for you =)

Panic at the disco is soo not emo, they're Alternative, and pop-ish. a real emo band would be Escape the Fate! Punk is absolutely nothing like Emo, emo comes from the word emotional, emo music is music that some ppl listen to, that may or may not relate to their problem. they listen to it to make themselves feel a little better, but then keep the same ideas and pesimistic attitude like," We're all gonna die". i am emo, so i should know this better than anyone who isn't. plz trust me. oh yeah, Punk is more rebelious, emo is depression.
