The lyrics of the song describe the title establishment, a hotel where "you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave". On the surface, the song is a tale of a weary traveler who becomes trapped in a nightmarish hotel that at first appeared tempting; as a metaphor the song may be commenting on drug addiction or simply the decadent lifestyle the hugely successful band had been caught up in. Another theory is that the song is about a mental hospital or a federal prison. The expression "check out" is also considered a metaphor for dying.

I've heard lots of theories about this one. The main one is that Hotel California is about demon posession and Satanism. You know, lines like "they just can't kill the beast."

The Church of Satan is actually located in a converted HOTEL on CALIFORNIA street. On the inside of the Eagles' album cover, looking down on the festivities, is Anton Lavey, the founder of the Church of Satan and author of the Satanic Bible.

People counter: the Eagles aren't serious, they're just selling records. However........The Eagles manager, Larry Salter, admitted in the Waco Tribune-Herald, (Feb. 28, 1982) that the Eagles were involved with the Church of Satan! Not surprisingly, one of the Eagles's songs is titled "Have A Good Day in Hell."

Some people think Hotel CA is about being enslaved by fortune and all the pitfalls that go along with it (seduction, drugs, depression, feeling trapped, etc.)

"Hotel California is an allegory about hedonism and greed in Southern California in the 1970s. At the time of its release, the Eagles were riding high in the music world, experiencing material success on a frightening level. Though they thoroughly enjoyed the money, drugs, and women fame threw their way, they were disquieted by it all and sought to pour that sense of unease into their music and to warn others about the dark underside of such adulation. "

It is about drug addiction. "Hotel" is where the protagonist in the song checked in for rehab. The end of the sixties brought on a sense of disillusionment and unfufilled dreams for many, and the Eagles captured it superbly in this song.
