Comcast OnDemand actually has free lessons available, or you could always take classes. If you have a friend that knows how to play, you could try to convince them to teach you.

Same thing happened to me. I tried 3 times before successfully sticking with it. I finally bought "Rock Guitar for Dummies." I learned about 4-6 basic guitar chords, and would just practice playing those chords and switching from chord to chord. It took a while (gotta stick with it!), but I got to where I could switch between chords pretty smoothly. Once I could do that I begin trying to play the chords to simple easy songs, the kind with only 3 or 4 chords in all. I got better and better with easy chords, and moved up to harder chords slowly but surely. So my advice is that you've gotta know the chords well. Once you learn many chord shapes, you can play not only more advanced songs, but some easy solos or lead guitar too. Solos often take their notes from the chord that's being formed, and you learn this as you progress. It's been about a year since I've done all this, and the difference in my playing level is amazing. I don't have to stare down at my hand to see chords anymore, it comes naturally. So the best advice is again, to stick with it. Learn a few chords, and play those chords to death. Switch between those chords until it doesn't feel so awkward, muscle memory plays a role. After this stage, try to play some easy simple songs. Being able to play these easy songs makes you feel good that you can actually play something, and it motivates you to get better to play even better stuff. Good luck with it, but the feeling of being able to play your favorite lick's and riffs is worth all the effort

I have to agree with the originol answer.
http://www.guitartricks.com is by far the best online lessons site.
I've been there quite awhile and can play pretty good now. The forums are a great place to ask any questions about guitar or anything else for that matter. You can find me there as magicninja.

Experience is the ultimate teacher. Im self-taught, and the hardest part was just sticking to it (mainly becuase it hurts your fingers at first) But just learn the basic chords (you'd be surprised at how many popular songs are built out of just two or three chords) then try looking up tabs (an easy-to-read guitar notation) and just...well, practice. :)

My advice is to go buy a book on beginners guitar. Just remember not to get too far ahead of yourself. You are going to have to take your time and be patient. Buy the book, practice everyday, and be patient and I'm sure you'll do just fine.
