He's new CD is Freedom's road and his new single is Our Country, check it out, it's really good. So he's pretty much alive.

Just heard him on Bob and Tom a few months back. Never really cared for his music, sorry, I'm a bit of a Classic Rock kind of guy, Van Halen, Boston, Styx, Foreigner, etc... Evanescence, rocks, I thought they stopped making that kind of music! Mellencamp is a real funny guy though! Be great to meet him.

He just released a new album earlier this year, and was on The Daily Show a month ago. So unless he died really recently, he's still alive!
