2nd number is X
1st number is 3X + 5
-2(3x+5) + 10 = 30 is what we need to solve
-6x -10 + 10 = 30
X (2nd number) = -5 1st number is -10

Checking: -2(-10) + 10 = 30 and we are correct.
Checking: 3(-5) + 5 = -10 and we are correct.

Let x be the first number, y be the second.

x = 5+3y
-2x + 10 = 30

solve for x in the second equation,
x = -10
plug into first, -10 = 5 + 3 y
-15 = 3y
y = -5

For example a similar problem:
one number is 9 more than 2 times a second number....

Call "one number" x and "a second number" y.
x=9+2y

5 added to -3 times the first number is 26.
5-3x=26

Now solve for x...
5-3x=26
5-3x-5=26-5 (subtract 5 from both sides of the equality)
-3x=21
x=-7 (divide both sides of the equality by 3)

since x=9+2y
-7=9+2y
-7-9=9+2y-9
-16=2y
-8=y
y=-8

I hope this helped you learn how to do the problem.

x= 3y+5
10 - 2x =30

10-2x=30
-2x=20
x= -10

-10=3y+5
-15=3y
y=5

X=-10 Y=5
