I think (based on my own background) because the african american have been in America so long, and as with any other race, there has been intermingling, therefore they are different feature wise from native africans. Still distinctive and beautiful, but different.

well, that's an interesting question. if you followed along in your history class, you'd know that most African-Americans in the us can trace most of their African ancestry to the western region.

also, i learned some interesting facts in my anthropology class, that I'll do my best to sum up in one or two sentences. I'll no doubt screw that up, but for time's sake I'll just attempt it.

sometimes the conditions in the ships were so harsh from Africa to the Americas, that only the strongest or those with bodies could withstand the hardships survived. so that's why certain illnesses and body types are prevalent (sickle cell anemia & hypertension) with people of African descent in the Americas. last i checked, these were well regarded theories.

Now, I'm not sure about Haiti. I know the indigenous population was nearly wiped out on that island. So African were shipped in inhumanely, and that's why there's a larger percentage of persons of African descent in the nation, as compared to some other countries in the Caribbean.

The first thing I think of is the fact that most Africans and Haitians have not mixed their blood/genes with many outsiders. African Americans are mostly decendents of African slaves. Remember that many female slaves were raped on a regular basis by slave owners, their family members, guests of the estate, etc. This bore offspring with a variety of characteristics/genes. A mixture of European; Irish, British, Italian, Greek, Russian, it is endless. So imagine all those mixtures, generation after generation. That is why I believe African Americans look so much different as you stated.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly. Africa is a big place and Africans from different parts of Africa look different, just like Italians look different from Swedes.

I guess African Americans would be mainly the descendants of slaves, so their forebears came from all over Africa, then got mixed up over hundreds of years. Most African Americans have some European ancestry as well.

The equivalent would be if you took Swedes, Italians, Greeks, Brits, Frenchmen and Poles, and mixed them up for hundreds of years with a few Kenyans and Egyptians thrown in. Of course, they are going to look different to other Europeans.

There is no such thing as racial purity, we are all mixed. And that's a good thing because it gives us less reason to hate each other.

Well and African is from African.... the others- be it African Americans, Barbadians, Lucians etc, They all are generations from the original Africans that were slaves. I believe it all has to do with how all these off springs grew up in different cultures and environments, all having different climates, social attitudes and many other differences.

Hello,
African Americans look different because we are mixed up... I've been over-seas and to my surprise I was actually able to spot African Americans from others from African descent.

Also, all Africans do not look the same. There are many differnet ethnic groups in Africa and they look different. Just like Europeans... Italians look different from Germans, Germans look different from Hungarians.

Different ethnic groups.

African/Black Americans are of African blood, but we are own ethnic group as well.

African Americans really arent african its just some country to catagorize us in. African-americans dont know really what we are. We are probably the only race that can not find an exact background besidesafrican only because we "look" like them. When really we dont.

Because of evolution. It only takes one marriage of a caucasion into a african american family to change things. plus, they've lived here for a while, so naturally their development will change. We are learning about this in Biology.

There's no way that you could have possibly seen all of the various physical characteristics that have emanated from the many nationalities that coexist in the African continent to be able to say this or to compare.
