Plate tectonics are huge plates that "float" under the crust. There are three kinds of boundaries between them: convergent, divergent, and transform. At the different boundaries different things can happen, but the most common thing that is shared are earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Not only do they "float" and shift against one another causing these natural disasters, but there is also evidence that they are shifting from there first discovered places. An example of this is the chain of islands that has formed, and are still forming, in the Pacific Ocean. i.e. the Hawaiian Islands.
