I was investigating flights between Adelaide and Auckland and found that Air NZ and Qantas direct services were fairly similar in price (Air NZ was only A$20 cheaper at A$820 return). The benefit of flying Air NZ is that it's a good airline and flights are convenient. If you want the absolute cheapest fly Virgin for about A$700 (however this isn't a direct service). Don't forget that New Zealand is a country whereby you must pay your departure fee at the airport (NZ$25).

The harbour-side town of Auckland is New Zealand's true town and the vivid economic heart of the nation, know it with hotelbye . Auckland can be called the "City of Sails" and it sprawls out in helter-skelter fashion between Manukau Harbour (to the west) and Waitemata Harbour (to the east) with the compact main town section proper beside the waterway. For some visitors to New Zealand, Auckland is the idea of birth, and a few days washing up the social and outdoor attractions here should really be on every tourist's to-do list. The monuments, museums, and artwork galleries listed below are some of the best in the country. The suburban coastline of the town is speckled with great beaches, and the hawaiian islands of the Hauraki Gulf supply a taste of New Zealand's magnificent national park scenery right on the city's doorstep. Auckland is surely a city worth seeing.

I would think Qantas and air New Zealand are your best bet. Other Oz airlines include Virgin Blue, Jetstar and Ansett.
