It's all about selective breeding. The ancestors of modern day domestic chickens could fly, but through selectively breeding over many generations desirable traits such as prolific egg laying, lack of broody periods and lack of flight have been accomplished. It just makes things simpler for chicken breeders, egg suppliers. The same is true with domestic ducks. All ducks are either Mallard or Muscovy descendants. Mallard descendants that are kept domestically lack the ability to fly. Muscovys, which are actually a goose that is native to South American are still able to fly, although typically what you see in domestic situations are birds that are simply to large to fly. The same applies to domestic geese.

Chickens can fly well enough to get up to a roost at night. The red jungle fowl from which they have been bred can certainly fly. Chickens nave been bred for meat, eggs and looks. Flying was not a necessary part of any of those. Wild fowl use flight to escape from predators. Domestic fowl are protected from predators by the farmers. Chickens that have escaped to the wild fly better than their caged counterparts because they need their escape mechanism if they are to survive.

The ancestors of chickens could fly. However chickens have been bred for their meat and not their flying ability which they lost along the way. Its man's fault that they can no longer fly.

Wild hens, and turkeys for that matter, can and do fly. Domestic chickens have been bred over the decades to be weak fliers to prevent escape.
