Don't have suggestion but not sure Maldives the right place unless you want total peace and quiet. The atolls are beautiful, the sea clear, the beaches soft but there is nothing else to do.............

West coast of Ireland - you have the laid back city of Galway and all of the beautiful scenery of the west coast. As an alternative you could head for Sanibel it's an island off Florida's most southerly coast and it's absolutely beautiful. It's a bit of a trek from tampa airport. I would still be tempted to go to Ireland though especially if it's the summer you're going in. As an alternative to the West coast of Ireland you could try the south east - Wexford. It's like the garden of Heaven on sunny days!

What time of year? How much can you afford?

My suggestion is France -- the food REALLY is THAT good. :-) Learn the basic etiquette, saying Bonjour Monsieur/Madame when you enter a small shop makes all the difference, and enough mangled French that they feel like you're making a real effort.

Or perhaps Ireland. Gorgeous land, terrific people.

Happy birthday to the lucky person.

What about one of the Whitsunday Islands Queensland,Australia ?
We have just had the most fantastic time there over the last couple of years ....Dunk Is. , Brampton , the best was Heron Island. if you don't mind birds ....it is a sanctuary so nests everywhere , watch your cocktail there are small fruit eating wandering birds !! turtles laying eggs or baby turtles hatching seasonally , amazing snorkling .the resorts we went to were managed by 'Voyages ' , excellent food at resorts ,no nightclub ....loved it to bits ...
My son will be going to work there prompted by me after working 6 mths in Canada

Also, there are nice bed and breakfast establishments all over. Whereever you decide to go, it might be nice to be somewhere away from tourists.
I would check for those out of the way, and perhaps less expensive places in countries I might be interested in.

I would recommend an African Safari to shoot wildlife with a camera. My family gave this to my parents for their silver wedding anniversary. They had such a good experience, they went back to another place the following year and enjoyed it all over again.
