Energetically speaking, reducing pyruvate gives muscle cells absolutely nothing. What's more, it produces lactate which causes your muscles to sting.

What it DOES do, on the other hand, is regenerate the NAD+ supply which can be used to get energy from glucose.

So directly, it does nothing. Indirectly, it ultimately allows the production of 1 more ATP from ADP and glucose.
