...after a short period of use the stick becomes quite hot, is this unusual?

"Last but not least, I have no reports whether you can run multiple Mega Sky 580s in a bid to watch and record different channels. Have you contacted the makers at all for advice on the heat problem

Depends what you mean by "quite hot".
So long as you can hold it fimly in your hand & resist the heat I'm sure it's fine.
