While optometrists will always be needed, likely the opthamologist would be the category seeing increases. In both cases, the aging US population will require more services for preserving their vision. The optometrist cannot treat disease and can only fit contacts or glasses. The opthamologist can treat diseases of the eye which is actually the higher skill set out of these two occupations.
