I'd like to make a moto track. I have the land, but that's it really. Is there anywhere where I can see a layout of a motocross track? Any ideas on how to make it? Do I buy dirt or just use the dirt already on site? How to form the jumps right? Which jumps do I use and where do I put them?
I have drainage covered.
Anything?

Wow, never thought I'd see this question! My brother rode pro motocross and we have 9-acres, most of which he turned into a track. It was a lot of hard work but so worth it, we had a lot of good times racing and riding in our own backyard! Here's what he did, maybe it will help. He was a teenager when he started the track and it didn't take long to finish but he and my dad and their buddies were always changing things around...

My dad was able to provide an arial-view outline of the property that had dimensions of the lot on it, probably from when he purchased the land. That's what my brother used to plan the track. By having the outline he could see where the house was, where the shed was and where our property ended and the driveway and stuff. The first thing he did was spend hours sitting at the kitchen table drawin lines and tracks and ideas out on copies of this outline so he could try ideas before he cut lines.

Then, he got his best friend Billy to come over. Armed with chainsaws, a brushsaw and heavy gloves they started at the front of the property and cut really a really rough outline of their idea through the woods/brush. Once they were able to define ridable area and jump placement this way they started getting into it hardcore. My dad rented a Bobcat for a day and helped with the jumps and some of the clearing. They didn't have to bring in any outside sand or dirt becuase we live in a very sandy area and all the dirt they moved to create wups they would use to make birms. Now if you want HUGE jumps you might have to bring in some dirt but you ought to be able to use what you have. My bro used a lot of plywood and lumber pieces as bases for his jumps which he then built in sand/dirt on top to prevent them from packing down flat eventually.

The trees were mostly left alone and the paths and track lines wandered around and past them. The bigger open area was bulit up with a series of jumps including a small tabletop. It was really a kickass track and all the brush they cut down was used on other parts of the track.

Riding the track was the best way to help develop it. The gorund quickly got rutted and birmed and they quickly figured out what parts of the design should be changed to optimize useage, speed and skill. It's hit or miss but the planning was the most important part, to be able to visualize what you want it to look like and measuring your space so you get your landing areas right, etc. It was a lot of work but worth it!

I recall the guys looking at a video game that had track deisgns on it (no idea what game!) to get ideas and scnaning Dirt Rider magazines continuously for answers and obstacles. I would think you can now check out websites for the LA Collesium and stuff when they have AMA Motocross to see the tracks they use too.

Good luck, if you have any more specific questions, please feel free to contact me and Ill get my brother's input!
