Tarpaulin is wrong. Cows spend more time lying down than they do standing up. They do not sleep standing up. Horses can do that, but not cows.

The nature of cows is to gobble up all of the food they can and then find a safe place to lie down, regurgatate the food they ate, chew it better and then swallow it down to the next stomach for further processing.

They must because my sister used to get drunk and go cow tipping when she was in college. If the cows were not standing up, they couldn't be tipped!

Cows do doze standing up and they lie down but rarely on their sides like a dog would
