How many of you flush your prescription drugs and other illegal drugs down the toilet or drain? Are you aware of the environmental effects of doing this?
This question is not meant to judge or criticize people, just wanted to see how many people do this and undertand the full extent of what they are doing.

Between 10% to 15% of all prescription drugs are not used by patients
- Often gets flushed down the toilet or thrown into garbage
- Proceeds to a landfill from where it can contaminate groundwater

I worked at a water plant on the Detroit River. One time when source water protection legislation came up, the water in the river was sent out for testing . Quite a few drugs showed up on the results, the largest being antibiotic. As you may know the area has a high percentage of retirees and older folks. We suspect most of the showing came through sewage plants as bodily waste. Unfortunately, for this type of polution there is no remedy at present.

The funny thing is if you own a septic tank and when the lids are pulled off to pump tank the drugs float right on top of the water so anyone can see them.. =)

they go back into the environment someway - if we dispose of them - right?
either down the tubes - or to a landfill?
