It's fine as long as the ceiling is in good repair and not falling down or damaged. Abestos diseases are nasty so don't take any chances - but there is no need to be paranoid either. You can always get an expert to test the residence for asbestos dust to give you peace of mind.

These particles are applied mixed with paint. After the intial application and general time & wear, there should not be any significant "shedding" of material. So if no one is disturbing it, it is not going to harm you.

Please remember that people were actively working with this material and breathing particles for years before significant harm was caused. Asbestos is an inert material. It gives off no vapors. You have to mechanically scratch/agitate this stuff (in your popcorn ceiling) for it to become a problem. Matter of fact I'd bet that if you did scratch it, the chunks would be big enough to just drop down on the floor and not small enough to be airborne and breathed in. Just a thought - I don't state that as a fact.

gignt know that popcorn ceiling contained asbestos. must be very old. in that case, it could be dangerous, espexially if it is coming loose anywhere. its on the ceiling and painted or not, it can flake off and fall. i would check to find out if it really did, in fact ,have asbestos. my guess, it doesnt, but dont take MY word for it. but DO find out. oh, i believe by law, you cant take it down yourself. and it is very expensive to have it done. so, find out first. its YOUR health.

If you just leave it, and paint over as necessary, it will not be a problem. As you have expressed though, it would be very harmful to sand it.

I believe it's safe as long as it's stable and not in dust form. You can check with your local health dept. they may know more.
