Blue green algae appeared on Earth about two billion years ago when the atmosphere contained anywhere from 25% or more carbon dioxide. (For you GW junkies that's 250,000 parts per million versus our current measly 360 ppm). Fossils of these algae appear in the Belt Formation of northern Idaho and Western Montana. These algae spent the next 1,500,000,000 years chewing through all that CO2 converting it to oxygen. This period was known as the pre-Cambrian period.
Then about 500,000,000 years ago in a rather short period of time (10,000,000 years or so) oxygen consuming creatures of many different types appeared in the waters of the Earth. This event was known as the Cambrian explosion.
The rest after this is, as they say, history.

Probably in the Cambrian, that is when invertebrates would have started going on to land. Vertebrates by the Silurian.
