Interesting question - many British people don't even feel British, let alone European; they feel English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern, Southern, Londoners, Westerners etc etc. There seems to be more of an enthusiasm towards a European sensibility within the business world, because of course it's a much bigger market than the "British" one. But there also seems to be a verrrrry slow process among the British of acknowledging that Britain is "part" of Europe, partially because it's geographically separate from the rest of the continent, and partially because people are slow to shake the idea of the "British Empire" making Britain "special" somehow, and almost above needing to work with any other European nation. It's certainly changing though - influences like tourism, culture and perhaps especially cuisine are beginning to transform British attitudes, and perversely enough, the Bush Presidency in the US is also having a pro-European effect in Britain (very many people over here sided with the French in the whole "Iraq War" debate). As for the single currency, there were strong economic reasons both for and against joining it, but the social context was simply a knee-jerk fear of something that's "ours" being taken away from us - the same reaction that happens in our national press if European regulations say we have to have cucumbers of a certain shape or anything similar. But beyond the media knee-jerk, yes, people are getting more Euro-centric over here.

2 b perfectly honest, i'm not sure how we're supposed 2 b feeling here in the UK.
we don't seemed suited 2 europe anymore than suited 2 being a new US state.
the UK is devolving & a bit of a mess politically right now, 4 anyone 2 b in charge & get a grip with our identity, would b nice but we're waylaid with lots of other stuff.
gambling & casinos, slavery abolition celebrations.
where we used 2 b respected, we're now saying lots of apologies.
what ever idea they had back in the 70's, they wanted us 2 b part of a great EU.
which is now turning out 2 b as corrupt as is cast in stone.

I feel European (but secondary to feeling British). I don't mind being part of Europe but not the EU (as in those fat cat bureaucrats who take out money and pass stupid laws we have to follow).

We economically need to be part of Europe but our traditions and history will not enable us to go into Europe with no remorse

No. No. It's just a map, isn't it, ultimately? A map that has evolved thru slavery, oppression, wealth, empire, etc. I am a rock, I am an eye-eye-eye land.

I do feel European and we are part of Europe. However, we do like our traditions - pounds, miles, yards/feet/inches, and so on.
