First you need to know what constipation in an infant is. Constipation in and infant does NOT refer to stool frequency ONLY to stool consistancy. So just because a baby hasn't pooped for awhile (7 days for breastfed, and 4 days for formula fed is considered normal). Straining and farting are also not diagnostic of constipation on their own.

However at one month old it is probably best to see a doctor.

*IF* your baby does have firm or hard poops then there are two safe treatments. The first and safest is to offer a 1/2 oz of cooled boiled water NO MORE than 3 times a day. The second is glycerin suppositoires.

SPECIAL NOTE: Corn (Karo) syrup may cause infant botulism. The new guidelines are not to offer ANY liquid sugars/sugar syrups to children under 1. (Including honey, molasses, maple syrup, table syrup)

# 1 thing..DO NOT give Karo Syrup. This has been shown to cause botulism, just the same as giving children under age 1 honey. I don't understand why so many doctors still recommend this as a treatment when it can be dangerous. My son's doctor is totally adamant about not using this. My son was a preemie and the nurses at Children's Hospital used infant suppositories on him. They just cut them in half lengthways. There is no medication in them and they are 100% safe.

Constipation is defined by hard dry pellets. NOT lack of bowel movement for a few days.
A few breastfed babys will start earlier than other at spacing out their bowel movements.
I say call your dr if your formula feeding and if your breastfeeding do not worry....

At only one month old, I would call up your child's pediatrician as for proper medicines and dosage.

And I know this may sound a bit odd, but you may want to try to take a rectal temperature, for two reasons. One, you can report the temperature to your pediatrician, which may help him diagnose and give the proper medication, and two, it may help your baby with his/her bowel movement! Any sort of stimulation, especially that of a rectal thermometer, can set off a bowel movement that early in life.

Nothing.

Talk to your pediatrician. Is your baby breastfed or formula fed? If its formula, talk to your ped. Sometimes iron is constipating, and your doctor can tell you which other ones to try.

You don't give a newborn water. It can be harmful to the child's electrolyte balance.

I would ask the Dr. I would not give a baby that young anything without checking a trusted Dr.

Water! Put a little jello in it to color the water and make it sweet. Also fruit juices. If the constipation doesn't stop, call the pediatrician.

This is going to sound gross, but it works like a charm (I had to do it with my son)... take a piece of regular hand soap (ivory or dove or something like that) and make a small pebble with it. Lightly push that into their little bum and then hold their legs together, against their stomach. Within minutes, it all comes out..soap included. The soap is just to lubricate the area... its an old wives tale that actually works.
Good Luck

My son's pediatrician told me to give him an ounce to a half an ounce of boiled water. Obviously let it cool, but you have to boil it for sanitary reasons. It helped too.
